Saint-Hippolyte

A Vast Yet Small Village

The municipality of Saint-Hippolyte was officially founded in 1869, under the name of Township of Abercrombie-Partie-Est. The name under which this town is known nowadays was only officialized in 1951. Towards the end of the 19th century, its inhabitants were mainly composed of Irish immigrants and lived, off forestry, agriculture and the surrounding rivers, just like other people in the Laurentides.

To this day, Saint-Hippolyte is for sure one of the smallest villages in the Laurentides, with its 123-km2 territory. After the first part of the 20th century, these spaces started to draw a number of vacationers from Montréal. These people were looking for large spaces to build their cottage and enjoy the forests and the some 62 lakes of the municipality. Still nowadays, the place is very sought-after by tourists looking for a vacation place, for outdoor adventures or for peace. In the low season, the number of inhabitants in Saint-Hippolyte barely reaches 6,700. In summer, 12,000 other people come to take advantage of the 65 kilometres of paths, of the lakes, the forests and the serenity of the landscape.
