Carillon Canal National Historic Site of Canada

Mid-May to mid-October

Along the Stream!

Located on a navigable way going through Montreal, Ottawa and Kingston, the Carillon Canal was built in order to bypass the hazardous rapids of the Outaouais River. It was inaugurated in 1833 allowing a great development in the trade sector for the region. Now mainly used by pleasure boats, the Canal's lock makes boats go down 24 metres in only 40 minutes. Moreover, the charming setting surrounding the Canal gives you the opportunity to discover and understand the important role played by this waterway in the past Canadian military and commercial strategies. So whether it is to sail trough the waters of the Outaouais River, to have a family picnic on the waterside or simply to relax in the outdoors, the Carillon Canal is definitely an attraction not to be missed in the Laurentides.
